Ferda Kolatan is the founding director of su11 architecture+design in New York City and a Senior Lecturer at PennDesign. He received his Architectural Diploma with distinction from the RWTH Aachen and his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University where he was the recipient of the LSL Memorial Price and the Honor Award for Excellence in Design.
In his talk, Kolatan will shed light on the recent discourse in architecture, which has moved towards objects, fiction, and the reinvestigation of the allusive thing we call “reality.” While the advent of new media in the 90’s had allocated the real within the virtual, celebrating networks and systems as the immaterial manifestation of nature, culture, and design, the past few years have seen a much different turn towards a world made of objects, real and fictional, human and nonhuman, mundane and strange. This paradigmatic change draws a trajectory from philosophy to art and architecture, and attempts to break with age-old traditions of thought and production, which have become insufficient to reflect adequately on our current situation. Ferda will trace this transformation both through his academic and architectural work, and reflect on the potentialities for design afforded by an amended reality.
Kolatan’s teaching resume includes Columbia University, SCI-Arc, Cornell, and Pratt among others. He has written about architecture extensively and co-authored the book “Meander: Variegating Architecture”. His practice su11 architecture+design has been internationally acclaimed and widely published. Exhibitions of their work have been shown at venues such as MoMA, Walker Art Center, Vitra Design Museum, the Beijing and Istanbul Biennales, Archilab Orleans, Art Basel, Artists Space, the Siggraph and Acadia conferences, and others.
